The 2018 Colorado General Assembly legislative session is underway, but we do much of our work at the State Capitol in Denver during normal weekday working hours. Legislators from Boulder County know it can be tough for people living or working in the Boulder area to get to Denver on weekdays, so we hold regular town hall meetings in Boulder County throughout the session – and our first one is coming up this Monday.
For the key details:
- When: Monday, Jan. 15, 5:30-7:00 p.m.
- Where: Sanitas Brewing, 3550 Frontier Ave., Unit A, Boulder
- Who: Rep. Edie Hooton, House Majority Leader KC Becker, Sen. Steve Fenberg, and you!
We will begin this meeting with a brief presentation on consumer protection in this era of real security issues. For example, the recent Equifax data breach exposed personal information of about 143 million Americans. Consumer protection is a big concern for all of us as legislators, and it can be very helpful for everyone to think about measures that can help them avoid being exposed to unnecessary costs and risks.
In fact, one of my first bills this session will be a consumer protection bill. It is designed to protect elderly homeowners and new homeowners from third party companies charging excessive fees for the acquisition of records that they might be able to get themselves. This bill should be formally introduced and given a bill number within about a week.
After the presentation, we’ll open the meeting up for questions and comments from attendees, on any state topic that’s important to you. I can’t emphasize enough that input from our constituents helps us better understand the needs and concerns of the people we represent. In case you’re not quite up to speed on what’s going on this year in the legislature, here are a couple of simple online resources that might help you prepare for Monday’s meeting:
- Big Picture: This Denver Post story outlines eight big issues facing the legislature in 2018
- General Assembly Website: Visit https://leg.colorado.gov to see any or every bill that’s been introduced in the House and Senate to date.
Whether you have questions or just want to listen and have fun with friends, I hope to see you at this meeting or at future events!
All the best,
